After completing my co-op experience at Good Beginnings I am more than happy to say that I am definitely going to be in a job environment that involves children, most likely a daycare worker. Since the environment and the typical working conditions include being in a classroom most of the time with limited time outside with hyper-active young children running around, any daycare worker needs to be able to have patience and be able to stay calm in any situation. As well, daycare workers have to be very observant to their surroundings to ensure the children's safety and have to be very responsible and reliable. Most importantly all daycare workers have to love children and love interacting with them.
In order to become a daycare worker, a person must gain a two-year diploma Early Childhood Education from an approved Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology (OCAAT) or an equivalent. Daycare centre supervisors must have the same education and have at least two years or more experience as a daycare worker. However, there are no educational requirements for other staff to work in a child care centre in Ontario. Once a person is educated and is placed in an environment as a daycare worker and they do not like it or did not expect it to be how they planned, there are other related occupations. Some of these occupations include,an early childhood educator, early childhood assistant, preschool educator, and a education worker.
There are lots of daycare workers needed and this will only continue to grow since more children are being born every year. Almost at every daycare there are positions available, currently there are daycare workers needed at Good Beginnings actually due to two workers going on maturity soon. The hourly rate ranges from $ 15.36 to $16.99 and can be paid an additional $2.00 per hour through the Provincial Wage Enhancement Program, if the applicable criteria is met.
